Vitamin D: The “sunshine” vitamin

As per recent studies undertaken, approximately 1 billion people worldwide, across all ethnicities and age groups, have a vitamin D deficiency (VDD). This pandemic of vitamin D deficiency can mainly be attributed to lifestyle (for example, reduced outdoor activities) and environmental (for example, air pollution) factors that reduce exposure to sunlight, which is required for ultraviolet-B (UVB)-induced vitamin D production in the skin. Current studies suggest that we may need more vitamin D than presently recommended to prevent chronic disease.

Vitamin D is unique because it can be made in the skin from exposure to sunlight. Without vitamin D, only 10–15% of dietary calcium and about 60% of phosphorus are absorbed. Vitamin D sufficiency enhances calcium and phosphorus absorption by 30–40% and 80%, respectively
